Your Introduction to Charlotte - the Heart of the New South©

The Carefree Boat Club at Lake Norman is THE Boat Club for Lake Norman

carefree boat clubIf you live in south Charlotte you’d be forgiven for seldom getting out on the waters of Lake Norman. For one thing, there aren’t any public beaches available — if you want to get out on the water you have to own n some property,  or  a boat. I’ve lived in Charlotte most of my life (since 4th grade minus college and a few years in Raleigh) and have only been out on Lake Norman a few times  — until yesterday.

Yesterday, I took my first trip on Lake Norman as a part of the Carefree Boat Club. Carefree is part of a unique new business that, unlike many boat clubs, is open to the public, if you are willing to fork over a few bucks and learn how to boat! Here is how it works: you start by joining the club and paying a one-time fee (a few thousand bucks — by far the biggest expense). After that, you pay a monthly- lower than a boat payment,  and you are free to take out any one of their over 16 boats at Lake Norman. Whether you want to go wake boarding, cruise in a 25′ deckboat, or sailing on their 25′ ketch,  or take your family out on a pontoon boat for a dinner cruise, they have the boat for you. Depending on your plan, you also can reserve boats when needed (usually only weekends/holidays).  They are closed Monday, but Tuesday through Thursday, come any  or all the time.

The only thing you pay per use is gas! They take care of all the maintenance, insurance and training. What this all amounts to, is a boat just about when ever you want it, only 20 or 30 minutes away. By my back of the envelope calculations, it costs about 1/3 of what owning a boat would cost with none of the headache. Mainentenace? no, on them. Clean up? No on them. Winterize, no again. As you may be able to tell, I’m a big fan. They didn’t ask me to write this post, it’s just another great thing to do in and around Charlotte. Bonus points? While Lake Norman is the main location, they have over a dozen satellite boat clubs from the Gulf of Mexico all the way up to the Great Lakes including clubs in St Petes/Tampa Bay, Charleston, Virginia Beach and Annapolis. 5 reservations outside the area are also included in your club dues. To top it off, the community at the club is nothing short of great. Friendly managers, helpful staff and a great locationlake norman all combine for an excellent on-the-water experience only 25 miles from the city center. If you’re interested in water sports, or just getting out on a boat to relax, I would highly recommend checking out the Carefree Boat Club. 2 thumbs way up from this guy 🙂 PS – If you’re a past client of either Terry McDonald or myself (or the McDonald Group) and want to get out on the water, drop us a line. We’d be happy to take you out for a few hours on Lake Norman. Related Posts Crowders Mountain|Charlotte Quick Trip Charlotte Knights Uptown at BB and T Park       Photo Via Flickr’s: Patrick Emerson
