Pan for Gold at Reed’s Gold Mine
This privately held mine will let you pan for gold for $2.00 per person. About 30 minutes east of Charlotte, Reed’s Gold mine was the first big hit of gold in the US, predating the the 49′er gold rush, and a major reason we had a US Mint, and now have a Federal Reserve Branch in Charlotte. “Children” aged 3-45 love to pan for gold and other minerals, a true fun for the whole family activity. Closed Sundays, you’ll need to go Saturday, or make time this week.
Mom’s get in Free at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden

Explore the Yadkin Valley| 90 Minutes From Charlotte
October 19th, 2011 Categories: Everything Else, Things To Do Charlotte
More NC Wineries: A day trip or weekend trip from Charlotte NC
An afternoon in Yadkin Valley, a perfect fall trip!
Take your time and spend an afternoon touring the Upper Yadkin Valley Wineries and you will experience a day of rich history and beauty. Driving through the countryside you will be welcomed with a kindness you only find in a humble small town. An unforgettable experience awaits the Yadkin valley traveler in each winery, each has a “founder’s” tale of how they got started and a real passion for what they do… The town stays busy with festivals, farming and hobbies that bring everyone together and invites outside guest from all over. The mountains close by provide a peaceful stroll and outdoor picnic or come for a day of hiking adventure! I was in love with the country side and taking my time tasting dozens of wines while hearing about the history and listening to the band play at the Cider Festival!
My first stop? Elkin Creek Vineyard
and I noticed right away the beautiful winery and a sea of vines to my left going up a hill. I walked over to the winery and just loved the old rustic door. When I walked in Nikki, the owner’s wife greeted me and I sat down waiting for my first wine tasting. She offered a meat and cheese tray along with the tasting which looked amazing! I immediately wished I had not already stuffed myself so I sadly declined. I started my tasting and just loved every one of them. Nikki told me her husband makes homemade breads that either goes along with the meat and cheese tray or on Sunday he makes homemade Brick Oven pizza! I noticed a sign saying “free range eggs “and I inquired about it, Nikki told me they have chickens that are like her babies. Walking around their property you will see two quaint streams that meet at a point. It was a lovely first stop. I pulled up and acoustic guitar music filled the air along with the smell of apples! The first thing I did was go straight for the cider table which was filled with baskets of apples and bottles of good old fashion Hard Cider! I tried a dry and semi sweet hard cider and a sweet non alcoholic fresh cider on tap. They also made an, oh my goodness delicious tart made with cheese, apples, and sausage! Sean, the owner, grew up learning the art of making wine from his Dad then as an adult he worked in wineries and vineyards all over the world. He took all his knowledge and passion to turn it into and earth friendly winery and planted his first vines in 2004.
I drove back down the trail to Grassy Creek Vineyards deciding to catch the other two wineries before they closed. I right away took the tasting which was fun since you
can choose seven wines out of over a dozen. The tasting was great and they provided cheese, crackers and chocolates. My favorite was the Sweet Red table wine which comes in a milk bottle and has a cartoon painted cow on the label, a must have. I left this winery and off to the last one of my journey Brushy Mountain Winery in the heart of the small town where they had a pumpkin festival blocking off the streets. I heard people from all over the area brought in their farm grown prize pumpkins to be given a ribbon for the best of the best. I walked around the Brushy Mountain winery but decided to come back another time and taste. I can’t wait to make my way up here again for fresh free range eggs, homemade brick oven pizza, and much more to taste and explore!
Enjoy the wine, and the autumn leaves in the Yadkin Valley, about 90 minutes NW of Charlotte, NC.

Charlotte’s Halloween Costume Destination: MORRIS COSTUMES SUPERSTORE
Halloween’s coming up fast, so let’s get a jump on that fabulous costume you’ve been thinking about all year long so you can really make a lasting impression on everyone. The ‘all-things Halloween’ destination in Charlotte is Morris Costumes, located on Monroe Road and run by Philip and Amy Morris. They started the costume business in the basement of their Charlotte home more than 50 years ago. Today it’s a thriving year-round business with seven local locations (both retail and wholesale). They have more than 31,000 different costumes to choose from, giving you a multitude of choices that definitely offers something for everyone.

In the beginning, the Morris’ business was mostly in costume rental and accessories, but with the advent of e-commerce business has shifted to costume sales in a major way. Morris said that he sells the majority of his costumes to big-box retailers and ships to buyers all over the world for online costume businesses. “In many instances, you can buy the costume cheaper than you can rent it,” Morris said.
Because Charlotteans are lucky enough to have Morris Costume right here in our city, a lot of folks take advantage of renting because you can pop in the store as late as Halloween day and pick out something for your child to wear Trick or Treating or for your totally outrageous party that night. “You can check the costume out for sizing, and of course rental costumes are a higher quality,” he said. Morris rentals have outfitted costumes for movies, and he even had the license for the costumes in several Batman movies.
