Charlotte Does Not Miss Irene and Other News

No we are thankful that Irene is out east, but feel for our fellow Carolinian’s. We are hoping they are as prepared as they appear to be, and that damage and loss of life would be minimal- but it looks to be a very large storm.  It will rake many of our favorite northern beaches, from the Outer Banks to Long Island, and our childhood favorite’s Ocean  City and Rehobeth too.

However it has been an unusually wet summer, and temperatures began cooling this month, before Labor Day. It is almost as we traded June- which was extremely hot, with August, which was more June like.

Matthews Alive is next (Labor Day)  weekend, a Matthews favorite and McDonald family favorite. This the largest street festival outside of Charlotte and is always a lot of fun- children and adults. Teen’s can roam on their own. Fun for everyone hoping for a nice Labor Day weekend.   Matthews Alive pictures and story. The Charlotte India Festival is Uptown next weekend, at the Knight Theater and the Levine Cultural Campus on S Tryon.  Celebrate all things Indian with food and Dance.   We’ve been here and enjoyed this- Charlotte has a strong Indian community.

Bank of America- and the nations banks, received a strong vote of confidence with a $5B investment from uber-investor Warren Buffet. B of A stock rose 10% Friday, and this appears to be a win/win for Buffet and the Bank.  Charlotte’s pride is the Bank of America, and while they were not big perpetrators of the junk loans, they bought theri way into it with the purchase of Countrywide Mortgage. Hailed at the time as “brilliant”, this is the acquisition that keeps on giving and giving. B of A paid 5 b for countrywide, and so far has registered 30B in losses due to the purchase. That is a big number that has been dragging the stock down and down. This past week B of A announced 3000 layoffs.

Skye Condominium opened its sales office in Charlotte for the 22 story mixed use project, once known as the Park.  It brings Uptown a 170+ room Hyatt Regency Hotel, 2600 sf of street level retail, and 67 condos including 2 penthouses. A rooftop restaurant will finish the project.

New home sales across the country fell for the 3rd straight month– this is not surprising to me.  The new home industry faces big hurdles in their recovery- a long list of foreclosures keeps the price of re-sales down making new homes less attractive, and buying a new home was always an optimistic act.  Our first home sellers are doing better than last year,  just about everyone else is just holding on.

Charlotte is becoming a clean energy and Renewable Energy hub

Another clean energy company is coming to the Charlotte area, Huntersville specifically welcomes the new headquarters of Lime Energy Company helps industrial building owners “reduce their energy consumption and  lower their carbon footprint.”  It will consolitdate its accoun ting, engineering and technology functions in Huntersville, and expects to add about 75 jobs in  the next two years.

North of Charlotte, near Huntersville,  NorthLake Mall Opens the area’s 2nd Apple Store soon. Steve Jobs we’ll miss you- but our northern folks thank you for the store… and we near Southpark thank you too. Southpark  is jammed 7 days a week. Perhaps the Northlake Apple will provide some relief. I doubt it. People love their I-Macs, I-Pads and I-Phones- no exception here.

That’s all for now, have  a great weekend, and  I’ll see you in Charlotte.
