Close your eyes. Imagined yourself right in the middle of a Dr. Seuss story. You’re  hanging out with the Cat in the Hat, Horton the elephant and Yertle the Turtle. How awesome is it to be a part of the crazy, nonsensical imagination of Dr. Seuss himself?  The closest thing to that fantasy and a large dose of Dr. Seuss characters is the Children’s Theater of Charlotte’s Broadway musical “Seussical,” now on stage at ImaginOn through October 23rd.

“Seussical,” which is directed by Alan Pointexter, gives children and adults alike a mega-dose of the silliness, outlandish imagination, compassion and values found in the verse and visuals of Dr. Seuss’ books. This 120-minute, two act performance based on Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty’s book “Seussical,” tells a wild tale of how Horton the elephant, through a series of fantastic adventures, manages to protect the Whos and find love along the way. The audience is invited to stretch their imaginations every which way, and walk away with a warm feeling only Dr. Seuss’ characters can give us.

Rob Odum, director of Audience Experiences at Children’s Theater, says that the show is best enjoyed by kids 5 years-old and up. “Although most of our audience has been children, we have plenty of adults coming without any kids,” he said. “There is sophistication to this production’s story. It has a deeper philosophical element that is something adults can get.”

Charlotte Observer Theater Critic Lawrence Toppman said, “…I think the child in him (Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss) might have delighted in the puppetry and shadow projection and gaudy feathers and twitching tails that make this “Seussical” as visually vivid as anything I’ve seen Children’s Theatre do.”

Join Mark Sutton as the tricky Cat in the Hat, Sam Faulkner as JoJo, the young Who boy and Chaz Pofahl as sweet Horton the elephant as they masterfully turn the whimsical imagination of Dr. Seuss’ characters into a story filled with friendship, compassion, and the importance of tolerance in our lives.
