NoDa – Charlotte’s Creative District: Live, Work & Play

February 27th, 2012 Listed Under: Living Here

Charlotte has so much to offer and like most great cities we have a community of artists.    Anyone living here knows the term ‘NoDa‘ very well now a days as the art district is only one mile north east of Charlotte.   The catchy little nickname was coined by architect Russell Pound and is short for North Davidson Rd.      It is a neighborhood of sorts that shares the same geography as Historic Charlotte (included in the National Historic Places Register).

But the thing everyone remembers after spending a day in this neighborhood is the wonderful sense of creativity & community that seems to continue to inspires more and more artists & creative types to move here.  Art, music and unique restaurants is what you will find on almost every corner.

This eclectic town looks like a lively and ever growing neighborhood but has only recently been slapped on the map.    The town started after its development in 1903 and really took off as a large textile manufacturing area for many years.    But Textile was never the same after the depression and this huge mill spot was closed around the 60’s taking with it many jobs.    A plummet of residents and businesses created many buildings to become boarded up and houses run down in the 80’s.   Finally in the 1990’s a rebirth came to the town and added some color. Artists from many different background began to see something beautiful in all the ruins & decided to rebuild them into galleries.

Come and visit NoDa and see the Art Crawl on the 1st and 2nd Friday of every month, play softball every Monday night in the warmer months in the N Charlotte Park, come to McGill Rose Garden to stop and smell the roses and view metal sculptures mixed in the gardens,  see a show almost every weekend at one of the many music venues, watch an outdoor movie the 1st Wednesday of every month, eat from one of the unique restaurants and much more it just keeps getting better!

Rachel grew up in Charlotte, but has lived all over the United States, and is recently back from the West Coast. You may know her as a Yoga instructor. She believes in keeping a healthy life style mentally and physically. She loves the outdoors and the city, traveling and meeting new people. If you see her about town with her camera, say hello.
