Wells Fargo Golf Tournament
Derek Ernst Delivers!
Despite the rain, cold and poor condition of the greens, the Wells Fargo PGA Golf tournament, like Derek Ernst delivered. Approaching the 18th hole Friday
This area (the 18th) is a great place to park your chair early, and wait for the players to arrive.
Derek Ernst is a household name now, but no one, except possibly his Mom and girlfriend, knew much about him on Wednesday, the day before the tournament began. The 4th alternate had just heard the good news 6 days earlier that he was invited to play at Quail Hollow. On Thursday and Friday, he was the precocious young player, playing over his head, and the one sure to fall in the high pressure sweepstakes of weekend play in the PGA. Or so we were told. His rental car story was the big story.
But he didn’t fall, he didn’t waiver. He stayed in control of his emotions, and with that his game. Sunday, the most magical of days in the PGA, in a full day of cold and often drenching rain, Derek Ernst shot a 70- his 2nd best round of tournament play on Sunday, and capped it with a magnificent Birdie on 18 to send it to a sudden death playoff.
Asked afterwards, he seemed more excited about being able to play in every PGA Tournament for the next two years… but his $1.2M in winnings, even $600,000 after taxes, won’t be overlooked.
I love this most democratic and meritocratic sport.
Way to go Derek!
